The answer in all likelihood is NO.
Well what would you do when you receive a request from a customer to purchase a vehicle on their behalf?
At Auto Square, we strictly adhere to the ironclad rule observed in the used car industry of «inspecting before buying». Our skilled staff, who all have at least 3 years experience of assessing used vehicles, will step into your shoes as they inspect each and every one of the vehicles we receive bids on as if they were inspecting vehicles that they were purchasing for themselves¹, before proceeding with bids/purchases.
In order to facilitate this, we have approximately a dozen full-time inspectors working out of our three offices in Osaka, Nagoya and Tokyo standing by to inspect vehicles exhibited at auctions around these three cities. Our used vehicle assessment experts will physically inspect the vehicles beforehand to make sure that no major problems exist before proceeding with the placement of bids.
If a problem is detected, we will swiftly contact you to seek your judgement on the issue.

When time zone differences prevent us from contacting you immediately, we may decide to cancel the placement of a bid, or carry out the purchase after having deducted the estimated costs to repair the relevant problem from the informed bid amount.
In addition, we will conduct further inspections after the purchase of the vehicle once transportation to our storage yard is complete. Here we will make sure that no major problems were missed during the pre-auction inspection, and at the same time list up the cost and availability of any parts which may require replacement. We will then contact you to seek your opinion on whether or not you wish for us to source these parts for you.
Unfortunately vehicles about to be exhibited at auction are lined up bumper to bumper, so it is not possible for our inspectors to actually drive these vehicles when they conduct our pre-auction inspections. Therefore during our thorough after purchase inspections, we always conduct test drives to ensure that there is nothing wrong with the transmission, engine, and the general running of the vehicle. If we do detect any problems we will immediately lodge a claim with the auction hall involved, and at the same time contact you to inform you of the situation and to seek your advice as to how you wish to proceed (cancel the purchase or claim a discount from the auction hall)².
However as most storage yard operators do not allow vehicles to be test-driven within their compounds, we at Auto Square have invested a lot of time and energy into finding yards which allow these sorts of practices. We strongly believe that test-driving the same vehicles we have conducted pre-auction inspections on is an extremely important aspect of our after purchase inspection. This is because as we mention on the top page of our website, if we were to ask people “Would you purchase a vehicle for yourself without first driving it”, we believe the majority of people would answer “NO”.
Even though the vehicles we are purchasing are not for ourselves, we conduct pre-auction inspections, and after acquisition, conduct our after-purchase inspections (including test drives), as if we were purchasing the vehicles for ourselves.
This ensures that only vehicles which are trouble free are shipped, which is our company policy.

Although these efforts bear a huge financial burden on us, we believe that this system is absolutely essential in maintaining the strong relationship we have built with our customers. We are committed to its continued practice, while at the same time finding new ways of improving and evolving to further meet the needs of our growing clientele.
Our PFO (Purchase For Order) operating system, whereby we only place bids on vehicles as instructed by our customers, allows us to operate without holding any stock of our own. After the vehicles are purchased, they are immediately transported to our storage yard for our thorough after-purchase inspection and immediately readied for export. Therefore no extra costs, such as yard maintenance and labor costs, which may arise from holding stock, are reflected on to our services charges. This enables our customers to choose and purchase a vehicle of their liking economically and speedily from a selection of over 100,000 vehicles exhibited every week.
Currently we maintain dealings with customers from over 30 different countries around the world, with this number growing everyday.
As our offices are operating 24 hours a day from Monday morning to the late hours of Saturday night, even customers from countries with substantial time differences to Japan can place inquires (via telephone or e-mail) or lodge bids and purchase orders at any time they like via e-mail or fax.
